A bag of unwanted commemorative coins cast aside in a Perth bedroom and about to be consigned to the loft has been valued at up to £20,000.
International Auctioneers Lindsay Burns of King Street is set to drop the hammer on the collection, with some sets worth up to £3,000 each, next week.
The young female owner of the collection said she was "absolutely gobsmacked" by its valuation and can't wait to see just how much it realises at Wednesday's auction.
Partner Nick Burns of Lindsay Burns said although the gold coins were left for years in a carrier bag they are in mint condition and should fetch top prices in the auction.
The coins' 20-year-old owner, who asked to remain anonymous, said the valuation came as a shock to her and her mum.
The Perth woman said: "I used to get coins regularly from two of my relatives at Christmas and birthdays.
"Every time there was a special occasion I would get those coins.
"To be honest, I wasn't that interested when I was quite young, I used to just say thanks and throw them in a bag and I never really did much with them.
"It was actually on Facebook I saw that Lindsay Burns were holding a free valuation day and I just thought, I wonder if they're worth anything.
"The collection became quite big and I just threw them in a bag and was going to put them in the attic, but because it was free I said to my mum we should get them to come and have a look.
"We just about fell off our chairs when he was saying 'this one's worth £500, this one's worth £300', we had ones up to £1,000 and
more.
"I just couldn't believe it, I just wish I had had more appreciation of them when I was younger.
"I didn't think they were worth anything, maybe £200 or £300 for the whole lot but it turns out it's £15,000 to £20,000."
Asked what she will do with her windfall, she said: "I have no idea what I'll do with the money.
"I'll wait and see what I get but I would imagine I would have a wee spending spree, maybe a nice handbag and then save the rest.
"If it's anything like Del Boy and Rodney's amazing amount I'll definitely be opening a few bottles of champagne and going public!" she laughed.
Nick Burns explained he was immediately excited by its potential value when he started pulling the individual sets out of the bag.
He said: "We got a call from a client and I went out to see them.
"They had this bag of coins in their bedroom which, basically, over the years a relative had every now and again given them, and she didn't really give it much thought.
"She just chucked them all in a bag and over the years the bag got forgotten about, languishing in a corner of a bedroom,
"We were going through them and I picked them up and said, that's a sovereign, that's worth £300 to £400, next one's a double sovereign, that's £600 to £900, next one's a five-coin set, that should reach £3,000.
"I'm adding it all up in my head and we get to the end of it and I said, 'basically you've got between £15,000 and £20,000 worth of stuff in that bag?
"It's fantastic, we've got a live auction platform and good international markets."
